Women’s Day
MARCH 2023
To mark International Women’s Day, Hillhouse organised a series of events in celebration of women at the firm, convening female employees from all levels to share their perspectives, insights and inspiration. Below are a few highlights from the conversations convened.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
“I am inspired by my grandmothers’ generation and the women that came before them. It is our duty to lead by example and help the industry evolve to better support women. I am grateful to work at a learning organization that is both well ahead of the curve with female representation and receptive to feedback.”
Harmeet King, Vice President, Capital Partnerships
“It’s encouraging to see so many outstanding female investors. No matter what obstacle they encounter, no matter what ups and downs they are going through in their industry, no matter what problems that need to be dealt with, they are always diving deep into the problem.”
Yamin Miao, Executive Director
HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?
“There’s nothing holding you back. Women are equally comparable. Everyone came to this company based on a certain quality: charisma, skills, network … figure out what that strength is, if you aren’t clear. Recognize where you are strong and where you are weak.”
Audrey Woon, Head of Compliance
“Work life balance is difficult, that’s true. But I’d encourage everyone in the team to…maintain a pace that is manageable for them. Try your best and remember, it’s okay to take a pause! The most important thing is to have a long-term, sustainable and optimistic attitude.”
Chloe Mo, Executive Director
“Check in with your female seniors at the workplace, they will give you great advice… Don’t be too hard on yourself when you run into problems; just focus on problem solving.”
Jingyi Fang, Senior Analyst, Climate & Tech
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR WELLBEING?
“Stick to a healthy schedule and enjoy the ride…by embracing the steep learning curve and the ability to learn something new every day. Often the most challenging things are also the most interesting. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself!”
Yuanchen Wang, Analyst, Climate & Tech
“I joined the investment industry by accident…but now I enjoy having conversations with outstanding entrepreneurs and colleagues… It’s very important to be happy. Only when you are happy can you unleash your true potential. Keep an open mind. Your life may take on very different changes. There are a million possibilities. I wanted to be a scientist, then a journalist, then a sociologist. It’s okay to change.”
Yamin Miao, Executive Director
YOUR ADVICE FOR WOMEN KEEN TO JOIN THE INVESTMENT INDUSTRY?
“Listen to your inner voice…Think hard about what you want and what you want to do. There is a lot of noise that girls should follow a certain path. In the investment industry you will never be bored, you are always challenging your framework. Investment requires not only desktop research, it also requires you to be very curious; outward looking.”
Christine Zhang, Associate, Healthcare Investment
“I find it helpful to remind myself that a career is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s important to identify what is most important to you and manage your workload accordingly.
The investment industry can be a fantastic place for women to thrive – it’s intellectually stimulating, relationship-oriented, and dynamic.”
Harmeet King, Vice President, Capital Partnerships
